           From Soulful Singing to Music Literacy

In this virtual workshop, learn some American folk songs and singing games. From that experience, we will identify:

• characteristics of English language folk song performance style and
• some principles of singing with spirit and soul.

From that foundation we will focus attention on classroom applications, from melodic and rhythmic reading to melodic improvisation.  The concept of the abstract will be introduced as a mechanism to make the transfer from “real” music making to music reading.
