NSW – LINKS to LITERACY: using music to support literacy in the early years
30 July 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm
$40.00This workshop will explore the links between music and literacy in prior-to-school and the early years of school. Participants will examine the relationship between musicking with young children and the process of becoming literate. Particular attention will be paid to rhythm, rhyme, phonemic awareness, prosody and melodic contour, and how songs and musical games can help lay the foundation for future reading and writing success.
Practical examples of materials for use with young children will be offered.
The importance of home-based musicking will also be considered, looking at current practices in the Australian context.
The workshop will be presented by Dr Peter Whiteman, former Head of the Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University, currently Associate Faculty of the S. R. Nathan School of Human Development, Singapore University of Social Sciences
This Workshop will be suitable for both Early Childhood and Early Stage 1 teachers
