Yvonne Tysoe’s contributions to Kodály music education in South Australia reflect her deep commitment and impactful involvement over several decades. Transitioning from a junior primary classroom teacher to a specialist music teacher in 1990, Yvonne embraced the Kodály approach and began attending workshops where she met Marg Lange. This pivotal connection led her to take on key roles within the Kodály community.
Yvonne’s involvement grew quickly as she took over responsibilities for the newsletter and advertising, becoming an active presenter. Her significant achievement came in 1998 when Kodály SA became the first state in Australia to produce an online newsletter, showcasing Yvonne’s adaptability and forward-thinking approach in leveraging new technology for communication and outreach. She continued to serve as the Newsletter Editor until her retirement from the committee in 2019, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the role.
In 1998, Yvonne also joined the Council of Education Associations of South Australia (CEASA) as the CEASA representative on the KMEIA SA committee, a role she held for many years. This position underscored her influence in representing Kodály education at broader educational forums.
Yvonne’s collaborative efforts with Margaret Lange resulted in two notable publications. The first, “Favourite Music Games,” was released in 2008 to celebrate KMEIA’s 30th anniversary in South Australia and continues to be a popular resource across Australia. Their second collaboration, “Let’s Start With a Song” in 2011, was designed to support the national early years learning framework, further demonstrating Yvonne’s dedication to enhancing early childhood music education.
Yvonne Tysoe’s extensive contributions, from her editorial work and committee roles to her influential publications, have had a lasting impact on the Kodály community and music education in Australia.
