Sister Colleen Roberts’ career in music education is a testament to her dedication and significant contributions to the Kodály movement in South Australia. Her journey began with teacher training in New South Wales, followed by her return to South Australia, where she made an impact as a piano and choir teacher in various primary schools and a secondary girls’ college.
Sister Colleen’s involvement with the Kodály community started in 1978 at the first Kodály conference in Adelaide, where the South Australian Branch of KMEIA was established. Her commitment to the Kodály method was evident through her roles as Newsletter Editor, Vice President, and President of the SA Branch. She also contributed to local workshops as a presenter and consistently attended every Kodály conference and workshop available, reflecting her dedication to continuous learning and professional development.
In 1982-83, Colleen furthered her expertise by pursuing a Masters of Music Education with a Kodály emphasis at Holy Names College, enhancing her knowledge and skills in the Kodály pedagogy. Upon returning to Australia, she was appointed as a part-time Music Consultant for the Catholic Education System, where she designed a Professional Development Course based on Kodály principles. This course became officially recognized by the University of South Australia, contributing to the Bachelor of Education program and extending the reach of Kodály’s methodologies in music education.
Sister Colleen Roberts’ extensive involvement and innovative contributions have had a lasting impact on music education, supporting both teachers and students in embracing and advancing the Kodály approach. Her dedication has helped to shape the landscape of music education in South Australia and beyond.
