SUMMARY:VIC: Foundations for Success: Music for Early Childhood and Diverse Abilities
DESCRIPTION:An active day of music making with expert teachers and facilitators. Two streams will be offered: \nEarly Childhood Music: \n \nLisa Shepard B Mus Hons/ B Ed. Lisa is a primary school music educator who currently teaches Early Learning (3 and 4 year olds) at Trinity Grammar School. She is passionate about teaching children how to make valuable connections to music from a young age. She holds special interests in curriculum design\, technology and has a wealth of experience in early years music education \nGeneral session overview: A playful\, positive experience is key to ensuring young children want to pursue future music making. Through singing\, instrumental exploration and games\, children are given an appetite for music.\nYoung children explore music concepts through hands-on\, interactive\, child-centred\, imaginative play. Learn how to develop young children’s musicality\, self-expression and discover ways to help young children become confident movers and music makers!\nBoth sessions to provide early childhood educators and music teachers with the opportunity to delve into developmentally appropriate music making opportunities for 3- and 4-year olds. \n\nDevelop young children’s musicality\, self-expression and discover ways to help young children become confident movers and music makers!\nThe development of the brain through improvising in the early years\n\n \nRenee Heron: Renee is currently a kindergarten\, primary music teacher and choral director at Caulfield Grammar in Melbourne\, Australia. She is also the founder and artistic director of The Yarra Voices and has taught with the Australian Boys Choir as Teaching-in- Charge of the Probationer training group. Renee had the privilege of attending the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Kecskemét\, Hungary in 2016-17 and is a methodology lecturer for the Kodály Music Education Institute of Australia. Renee holds a Master of Teaching from the University of Melbourne and the Australian Kodály Certificate specialising in Early Childhood Music. \nGeneral session overview: This workshop will discuss what happens to our brain when we improvise and why it is of such importance for us to develop and nurture this skill in the early childhood and primary years as it will help to set children up for composition tasks as their musical skills progress. Participants will join in a number of practical activities\, games\, songs and rhymes that can be used to teach improvisation and composition\, and will view videos and recordings of children\, ages 5-10\, performing these in a classroom setting. The workshop will also discuss different approaches we can take as Kodály music educators when developing sequences for improvisation and composition. \nDiverse Abilities \n \nEbony Birch-Hanger and special guest: Ebony (B EC – Hons; M SpEd – Deaf/HH) is a Special Education Teacher\, Neurodevelopmental Therapist\, Teacher of the Deaf\, Kodaly-trained Music Educator\, Education Consultant & Public Speaker. She has over 10 years of experience supporting students with a variety of medical conditions and diagnoses\, in therapy\, school and home settings. She successfully uses Kodaly’s philosophy and methodology sequences with individuals on the Autism Spectrum\, those with varying verbal skills\, additional learning needs & auditory processing difficulties. \nSession 1: Enhancing students’ language and communication skills through music – Ebony Birch-Hanger \nThis session will delve into how speech rhymes\, songs and exploring vocal sounds can be used to enhance the skills of students with varied language development. We will look specifically at extending students’ vocabulary\, developing language structure and building conversational skills and expression. \nSession 1.5: Enhancing students’ participation and engagement in the music classroom – Presenter TBC \nThis session will look at ways to enhance student engagement by adjusting your interaction style and supporting peer relationships. You will also build on your skills in collaborating with your integration aides to ensure they are providing students with the most useful form of support within music learning activities. \nSession 2: Supporting executive functioning and sensory processing needs to increase success in the music classroom – Presenter TBC \nWhen students require additional support with planning\, organising and sequencing it can affect their learning. This session will explain some challenges your students may have with executive functioning and how you can support their needs. We’ll also look briefly at sensory processing and some simple adjustments you can make within a music classroom to make it more sensory inclusive. \nSession 3: Adjustments to instruction and assessments to increase accessibility and achievability for all students – Ebony Birch-Hanger  \nThis workshop will demonstrate simple adjustments you can make minimise the abstract qualities of an aural-based approach for students with diverse abilities. We will look at increasing students’ willingness and ability to demonstrate their learning during class; supporting your instruction with more visuals\, varying your language and presenting assessments in varied ways. \nSession 4: Rhythmic and melodic concepts taught through engaging movement activities (for all ages/abilities) – Ebony Birch-Hanger \nThroughout this workshop\, you’ll be actively involved in a variety of sequential movement and coordination activities. Jason has experience teaching music in early childhood\, primary and secondary schools\, one-to-one studios\, tertiary institutions and community settings. At UQ\, he has held numerous positions in lecturing\, assessment and curriculum development for undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the School of Music and School of Education. His doctoral research investigates adolescent boys’ music beliefs\, values and identity work in an independent school. Jason is the National President of Kodály Australia\, a Council member of the Australian Society for Music Education Queensland Chapter and the Representative of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission for the Queensland Advisory Committee for the Australian Music Examinations Board. He is frequently invited to present in Australia on music education and aural musicianship\, and has presented workshops and academic papers at national and international conferences. \n \nKate Thompson is a frequent lecturer and guest presenter at conferences and workshops. She has presented Kodaly Training Courses in Brisbane\, Sydney\, Perth\, Auckland\, Hawkes Bay and Kuala Lumpur. Kate is a Past President of Kodaly Queensland (KMEIA) and has also conducted choirs of various ages for Voices of Birralee. Kate has taught classroom music at both state and independent schools and is currently a Music Specialist at Ambrose Treacy College in Brisbane. Having taught in boys’ education for the majority of her teaching career\, Kate is passionate about raising the profile of Music and enjoys finding new ways to engage her students.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the links between music and literacy in prior-to-school and the early years of school. Participants will examine the relationship between musicking with young children and the process of becoming literate. Particular attention will be paid to rhythm\, rhyme\, phonemic awareness\, prosody and melodic contour\, and how songs and musical games can help lay the foundation for future reading and writing success.  \nPractical examples of materials for use with young children will be offered.\nThe importance of home-based musicking will also be considered\, looking at current practices in the Australian context.  \nThe workshop will be presented by Dr Peter Whiteman\, former Head of the Institute of Early Childhood\, Macquarie University\, currently Associate Faculty of the S. He is currently Artistic Director of the Queensland Show Choir and music specialist at Mount Alvernia College in Brisbane. Daniel holds a Master of Music Studies in Aural Pedagogy\, Master of Educational Leadership\, a Bachelor of Music majoring in Voice\, a Bachelor of Education and the Australian Certificate in Kodály Music Education. He has held several middle and senior leadership positions in schools and was the recipient of a National Award for Excellence in Music Education. He is a regular lecturer nationally and internationally in musicianship\, choral conducting and classroom methodology and has held casual positions at The University of Queensland and the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. He has been part of the Cuskelly College of Music Education Faculty for over 10 years as a leader of secondary courses and is a regular lecturer as part of the Australian Kodaly Certificate in Western Australia. Daniel has a sincere passion for both music education for all and the importance of choral singing in establishing a strong sense of community. \n\n\n\nSONY DSC \n\n\nRéka Csernyik is one of Australia’s foremost experts in choral conducting\, choral conducting pedagogy and aural musicianship. She has taught music at every level of education – with wide experience in primary and secondary schools as well as at university level. Réka held the position of Co-ordinator of Choral Conducting and lecturer of Aural Musicianship at University of Queensland between 2004 and 2010. Réka has regular engagements as a guest lecturer\, adjudicator and workshop facilitator within Australia and overseas. She was founder and director of Sola Voce Chamber Choir. In 2015\, Réka commenced her new role of Co-ordinator of Kodály Pedagogy at the Conservatorium High School in Sydney. \n\n\n\n \nMicheál McCarthy spent 14 years studying at the Cork School of Music\, Ireland. He is a graduate of University College Cork\, Ireland and the Zoltán Kodály Pedagogical Institute of Music in Kecskemét\, Hungary\, where he studied under Péter Erdei. Micheál has held positions at the Canberra School of Music – Australian National University\, the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music\, and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts – Edith Cowan University. He offers a unique form of training to students of every age from 5 years through to university level. He is also the Director of the Cottage Music Institute. Micheál conducts regular workshops for teachers\, students\, and community organisations in Australia and overseas; his workshops have featured at national and international conferences and festivals.

DESCRIPTION:Full Day Workshop which will include sessions on Conducting Techniques\, Choral Methodology and Repertoire with renowned conductor and teacher\, Mark O’Leary. \nMark O’Leary OAM is one of Australia’s most highly regarded choral conductors\, widely respected for his work with Young Voices of Melbourne and as Principal Guest Conductor of Gondwana Voices\, Australia’s national children’s choir.  \nWith special interests in Kodaly teaching techniques\, the development of excellence in children’s choirs and Australian choral music\, Mark presents many workshops each year on choral music education throughout Australia and is the Victorian Branch President of the Kodaly Music Education Institute of Australia.
