SUMMARY:NSW: Primary BACK to SCHOOL DAY is BACK!
DESCRIPTION:‘Head\, Hand\, Heart’: Beyond ta and ti-ti \nKodaly said that “The characteristics of a good musician are a well-trained ear\, a well-trained mind\, a well-trained heart and a well-trained hand”. He believed that a person cannot be complete without music and that music serves to develop a person on all levels – emotionally\, spiritually and intellectually. \nIn the primary sessions Rowena will unpack these elements of musicianship by connecting them to the four key areas of the Australian Music Curriculum – Aural skills\, Singing and Playing\, Composition (including reading and writing)\, and Listening and Responding. She will also address the question of balancing academic rigour in the music classroom with opportunities for joy\, wonder and social/emotional growth. With a wealth of diverse repertoire both new and old\, local and global\, this presentation will appeal to all primary music teachers whether generalist or specialist\, experienced or early career. \nDate: Friday 24th February 2023\nPresenter: Rowena Tall (Victoria)\nVenue: Penrith RSL\, 8 Tindale Street Penrith 2750\nTime: 9.00 am – 3:30 pm \nRegistration (must be completed prior to Payment): Click HERE \nCOST  \nMembers: $170\nNon-members: $240 (includes membership)\nStudents: $85\n(Students must be members to attend at this rate: join for FREE at www.kodaly.org.au/membership) \nBecome a member – www.kodaly.org.au/membership\nEnquiries: nsw@kodaly.org.au

SUMMARY:Kodály NSW Back to School Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:This year our Back to School Day will be once again be held online. It will consist of 2 workshops – one with a Primary focus and one with a Secondary focus\, although we encourage you to attend both workshops as there will be many things are transferable to different contexts.  \nWorkshop 1 – Secondary Focus (Friday 25 February 6 – 8pm) presented by Réka Csernyik (Hungary) \n \nHave you ever wondered why it is difficult to get closer to contemporary art music? Have you ever given your students the possibility to understand and appreciate the wonders of 20th century music? Have you ever asked yourself how to become more familiar with Bartok’s music? It can be very rewarding to teach Bartok’s music in a secondary setting. Students have an open mind to appreciate the artistic talent of the genius\, the numerous\, smart musical elements and the beauty of numbers in his works.  \nIn this two-hour session\, Réka will share her approach on how to get closer to the first movement of Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra through careful and sequential preparation\, in order to increase students’ understanding and love for the 20th century and contemporary art music.  \nWorkshop 2 – Primary Focus (Saturday 26 February 10am – 12pm) presented by Victoria Boler (USA) \nWhere should we begin instruction in the 2022 school year? How will we know what information and skills students have retained? How can we begin building strong classroom communities that support students as they build on previous musical knowledge? This session provides active and student-centered assessment strategies for the first weeks of elementary general music. Attendees will walk away with specific strategies to review musical concepts using long-range curriculum planning\, student reflection\, play-based musicing\, and active assessment.  \nCOST \nMembers: $25 (1 workshop) / $45 (both workshops)\nNon-members: $95 (1 workshop) / $115 (both workshops) – includes 1 year membership\nStudents: $12.50 (1 workshop) / $22.50 (both workshops)\n(Students must be members to attend at this rate: join for FREE at www.kodaly.org.au/membership) \nBecome a member at www.kodaly.org.au/membership\nEnquiries: nsw@kodaly.org.au \nCLICK HERE to REGISTER

SUMMARY:Move It! Move It! Move It! - a workshop with Dr John Feierabend
DESCRIPTION:Kodály NSW is excited to announce that Dr John Feierabend will be hosting our final Professional Development for the year! \n\n\n\n\nDr Feierabend is considered a world leading expert in music and movement development. He is passionate about developing all individuals to be tuneful\, beatful\, and artful. Through his teachings and research\, Dr Feierabend has developed two music methods – First Steps in Music for early childhood – early primary\, and Conversational Solfege – a music literacy program for primary and high school students.\n\n\n\nDue to the dynamic flux of Music education this year in NSW and the current constraints to singing\, we have decided a Movement workshop would be ideal to upskill us all for the future. In this workshop\, participants will learn about Dr Feierabend’s approach to movement\, including Movement Exploration\, Movement for Form and Expression (also known as Move Its) and Beat Motions with Classical Music. Please see GIA Publications website for more information about Dr Feierabend\nhttps://www.giamusic.com/music_education/johnfeierabend-main.cfm \nA number of members of our Kodály Committee have studied directly with Dr Feierabend\, and have found his workshops and courses to be highly engaging and inspiring. This is an opportunity not to be missed! \nWe warmly welcome NSW members to stay for the Kodály NSW AGM that will follow directly after this workshop. \nDate: Sunday 15 November 2020\nPresenter: Dr John Feierabend\nVenue: via Zoom (link will be provided when you register)\nTime: 10.00am – 11.30am (Sydney time) \nCOST  \nMembers: $20\nNon-members: $90 (includes 1 year membership)\nStudents: $10 (Students must be members to attend at this rate: join for FREE at www.kodaly.org.au/membership) \nBecome a member at www.kodaly.org.au/membership\nEnquiries: nsw@kodaly.org.au \nCLICK HERE to REGISTER

SUMMARY:Margaret Smith AKC Scholarship
DESCRIPTION:The Margaret Smith AKC Scholarship provides financial assistance for music educators to pursue studies towards the Australian Kodály Certificate. Kodály NSW is offering four scholarships to attend the NSW AKC Course in 2020. One full scholarship ($1500 value) is available for a music educator working in rural NSW\, one full scholarship ($750 value) for a tertiary student and a further two half scholarships ($750 value each) for NSW music educators. The NSW AKC Course is held in 3 blocks – Autumn School\, Winter School and Choral Weekend (see dates below). Completion of all 3 blocks is required to achieve one level of the AKC. Upon successful completion of 3 levels of the same specialisation\, (Early Childhood\, Primary or Secondary)\, candidates may apply for the Australian Kodály Certificate. This scholarship covers fees for one level of the AKC held in NSW. \nMargaret Smith (1932-2016)\nInspired by Deanna Hoermann (founder of Kodály Music Education Institute of Australia)\, Margaret completed the AKC in 1991 and served as a board member of the National KMEIA for over 20 years. Margaret’s legacy to Kodály Music Education in NSW is incomparable as she reinvigorated the NSW branch in the 1990’s and continued as President for 10 years. Thanks to her tireless work in 1997\, the first NSW AKC course was set up in Sydney\, and she continued to coordinate\, teach and cater for Kodály candidates from all over Australia until 2011. \nAs a country girl herself\, Margaret always empathised with the challenges faced by country schools in finding qualified music teachers and gave extra support to country teachers to facilitate their Kodály training. Margaret’s huge heart and intellect always made the big things possible. Her great service will long be remembered and admired. We are pleased to offer this scholarship in Margaret’s memory and honoured to be able to advance her vision by facilitating quality Kodály-based music education for teachers in NSW\, particularly those working in rural areas. \nHow to apply\n•   Complete the application form at https://tinyurl.com/MSmithAKCScholarship2020 by Friday 13 March 2020\n•   Include a written reference supporting your application – either upload in the application form or email to nsw@kodaly.org.au by Friday 13 March 2020. \nCriteria\nEach application will be assessed according to the following criteria:\n•   current financial member of Kodály NSW at the time of application\n•   interest in and understanding of the Kodály philosophy\n•   commitment to continued professional development as a music educator\n•   ability and willingness to promote the goals and philosophies of Kodály Australia\n•   planned implementation of skills and knowledge gained \nScholarship recipients will also be required to submit an article outlining insights they have gained for the Kodály NSW newsletter.
